New York, 11 March 2024 – Embracing the transformative power of storytelling, the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are delighted to launch the application period for the 2024 edition of the PLURAL+ Youth Video Festival, inviting global youth to submit short videos on pressing social issues. This year, PLURAL+ will continue to illuminate the enduring themes of migration, diversity, and social inclusion, while also spotlighting two special categories focusing on combatting xenophobia and fostering inclusive climate action.

“Migration has been a cornerstone of human history, shaping cultures, societies, and economies. It is also a promise for a sustainable future,” said IOM Director General Amy Pope. “However, too often, migrants face many challenges such as discrimination, prejudice, and exclusion. Through the medium of film, storytellers have the unique ability to capture the nuances of these experiences, fostering empathy and solidarity across communities.”

Now in its 16th edition, PLURAL+ encourages diverse youth to use innovative storytelling techniques — be it narrative fiction, documentary, animation, or any genre — to challenge stereotypes, promote dialogue, and advocate for social cohesion. Submissions should aim to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding migration and diversity, promote dialogue and understanding among diverse communities and advocate for social inclusion and equality for all individuals, regardless of background.

“At its core, PLURAL+ empowers young media makers not only to challenge existing paradigms but also to highlight diverse perspectives and use their voices to shape a more inclusive world,” underscored Mr. Miguel Ángel Moratinos, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for UNAOC. “Through the power of storytelling, young people have an opportunity to defy stereotypes, cultivate mutual respect, and inspire positive social change. As a platform for young people to share their narratives, PLURAL+ aims to enrich the collective tapestry of #OneHumanity and pave the way to a future where every voice is heard.”

PLURAL+ 2024 International Jury Distinctions will be presented to three videos, one for each of the age categories (12 years old and under; 13 to 17 years old; and 18 to 25 years old). These videos will be selected by a panel of renowned Jury members and experts in their field.

Additionally, UNAOC and IOM will confer two Special Recognitions this year:

  • The Special Recognition for Combating Xenophobia and Discrimination will be conferred to a film that advocates for mutual respect and depicts the pressing global issues of xenophobia and discrimination, particularly when based on ethnicity, religion, or belief, such as antisemitism, Christianophobia, Islamophobia, or other forms of religious intolerance.
  • The Special Recognition for Inclusive Action on Climate Change and its Impact on Migration will be granted to the best short film that explores the nexus between migration, environment and climate change and highlights the challenges and opportunities, while also advocating for inclusive approaches that address the intersecting strengths and vulnerabilities of diverse communities.

Selected films will be showcased at the PLURAL+24 Annual Ceremony, which is scheduled for Autumn 2024 in Lisbon, Portugal, and will be broadcast live through UN Web TV and livestreamed on the PLURAL+ website. During the Ceremony, young filmmakers will have an opportunity to present their work to a global audience.

The deadline to submit videos to the 16th edition of PLURAL+ is Friday, 31 May, at 11:59 EDT (New York time).
